Law

"Therefore, I teach you the statutes and decrees as the Lord, my God, has commanded me,
that you may observe them in the land you are entering to occupy.
Observe them carefully, for thus will you give evidence of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations,
who will hear of these statutes and say:
'This great nation is truly a wise and intelligent people'"
(Deuteronomy 4:5-7)

Those who murmur against the strictness of the laws of the Church understand neither the meaning nor the purpose of law. God's commandments are wise, they define for us an evil and a good that does not change with time. For there is a definite good and evil, and good is with God while evil is against Him.

To properly form our consciences and teach us how to act, God, in His Wisdom, knows that we need to be guided by law. If we are to successfully tread in the ways of good and peace, we must accept the guidance He offers. By following the law we imitate the obedience of our Divine Savior, the perfect man. Thus we can come to a greater perfection than could otherwise be reached by our poor human judgment, so weakened by sin.

The law serves to keep the flock of Christ, the Good Shepherd, together in the sheepfold. Truly, without this law, we could not live in peace and harmony, for our differing intellects would be a constant cause of strife among us. Trust God, who is wise and sees far beyond our view. Go where He leads and keep the pace He sets, for surely this will lead to eternal life. Show Charity to your neighbor, just as the Shepherd shows to you, and you will find peace and joy. If we follow Him thus, we will rise our of the destitution of our sin and into His embrace.
